What is Pus?

Pus is a thick substance made up of dead blood cells that are caused by bacterial infections.

What are symptoms of Pus?

  • Lump or mass underneath the skin
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Skin redness
  • Skin warmth
  • Swelling

What causes Pus?

Pus is caused because cells in our body that help fight infections breakdown. It is often the result of bacterial infections.

Other causes of Pus are:

  • Abscesses
  • Acne
  • Boils
  • Infected surgical wounds
  • Throat infection, such as strep throat
  • Traumatic injury
  • Upper respiratory infection

Treatment will depend on what causes the Pus.

Pus will probably be treated by your Primary Care Physician. In serious cases an Emergency Room Physician would also be seen.
