Dynamical stability of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates with temporal modulation of the s-wave scattering length. - Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics
We study the stabilization properties of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate by temporal modulation of short-range two-body interaction. Through both analytical and numerical methods, we analyze the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation with short-range two-body and long-range, nonlocal, dipolar interaction terms. We derive the equation of motion and effective potential of the dipolar condensate by variational method. We show that there is an enhancement of the condensate stability due to the inclusion of dipolar interaction in addition to the two-body contact interaction. We also show that the stability of the dipolar condensate increases in the presence of time varying two-body contact interaction; the temporal modification of the contact interaction prevents the collapse of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. Finally we confirm the semi-analytical prediction through the direct numerical simulations of the governing equation.
Parity-time-symmetric solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates and the influence of varying complex potentials: A variational approach. - Physical review. E, Statistical, nonlinear, and soft matter physics
Dynamics and properties of nonlinear matter waves in a trapped BEC subject to a PT-symmetric linear potential, with the trap in the form of a super-Gaussian potential, are investigated via a variational approach accounting for the complex nature of the soliton. In the process, we address how the shape of the imaginary part of the potential, that is, a gain-loss mechanism, affects the self-localization and the stability of the condensate. Variational results are found to be in good agreement with full numerical simulations for predicting the shape, width, and chemical potential of the condensate until the PT breaking point. Variational computation also predicts the existence of solitary solution only above a threshold in the particle number as the gain-loss is increased, in agreement with numerical simulations.
Thermal properties of tannin extracted from Anacardium occidentale L. using TGA and FT-IR spectroscopy. - Natural product research
The chemical nature of the polyphenols of cashew kernel testa has been determined. Testa contains tannins, which present large molecular complexity and has an ancient use as tanning agents. The use of tannins extracted from cashew testa, considered in many places as a waste, grants an extra value to the cashew. In this work we have analysed through high performance liquid chromatography, infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and thermo gravimetric analysis the average molecular weight, main functional groups and thermal properties of tannins extracted from Anacardium occidentale L. The results of these analyses are compared with the commercial grade tannic acid. The FT-IR spectra showed bands characteristic of CÂ =Â C, C-C and OH bonds. This important bioactive compound present in the cashew nut kernel testa was suggested as an interesting economical source of antioxidants for use in the food and nutraceutical industry.
Overexpression of an AP2/ERF Type Transcription Factor OsEREBP1 Confers Biotic and Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Rice. - PloS one
AP2/ERF-type transcription factors regulate important functions of plant growth and development as well as responses to environmental stimuli. A rice AP2/ERF transcription factor, OsEREBP1 is a downstream component of a signal transduction pathway in a specific interaction between rice (Oryza sativa) and its bacterial pathogen, Xoo (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae). Constitutive expression of OsEREBP1 in rice driven by maize ubiquitin promoter did not affect normal plant growth. Microarray analysis revealed that over expression of OsEREBP1 caused increased expression of lipid metabolism related genes such as lipase and chloroplastic lipoxygenase as well as several genes related to jasmonate and abscisic acid biosynthesis. PR genes, transcription regulators and Aldhs (alcohol dehydrogenases) implicated in abiotic stress and submergence tolerance were also upregulated in transgenic plants. Transgenic plants showed increase in endogenous levels of Î±-linolenate, several jasmonate derivatives and abscisic acid but not salicylic acid. Soluble modified GFP (SmGFP)-tagged OsEREBP1 was localized to plastid nucleoids. Comparative analysis of non-transgenic and OsEREBP1 overexpressing genotypes revealed that OsEREBP1 attenuates disease caused by Xoo and confers drought and submergence tolerance in transgenic rice. Our results suggest that constitutive expression of OsEREBP1 activates the jasmonate and abscisic acid signalling pathways thereby priming the rice plants for enhanced survival under abiotic or biotic stress conditions. OsEREBP1 is thus, a good candidate gene for engineering plants for multiple stress tolerance.
Molecular docking and QSAR analyses for understanding the antimalarial activity of some 7-substituted-4-aminoquinoline derivatives. - European journal of pharmaceutical sciences : official journal of the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences
The quinoline moiety is one of the widely studied scaffolds for generating derivatives with various pharmacophoric groups due to its potential antimalarial activities. In the present study, a series of 7-substituted-4-aminoquinoline derivatives were selected to understand their antimalarial properties computationally by molecular modeling techniques including 2D QSAR, comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA), comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) and molecular docking. The 2D-QSAR model built with four descriptors selected by genetic algorithm technique and CoMFA model showed satisfactory statistical results (Q(2)=0.540, R(2)ncv=0.881, F value=157.09). A reliable CoMSIA model out of the fourteen different combinations has a Q(2) value of 0.638. The molecular docking studies of the compounds for 1CET as the protein target revealed that ten compounds showed maximum interactions with the binding site of the protein. The present study highlights the unique binding signatures of the ligands within the active site groove of the target and it explains the subtle differences in their EC50 values and their mechanism of inhibition.Copyright Â© 2015 Elsevier B.V. Seed priming with BABA (Î²-amino butyric acid): a cost-effective method of abiotic stress tolerance in Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek. - Protoplasma
The effects of Î²-amino butyric acid (BABA) on abiotic stress tolerance potential of three Vigna radiata varieties were studied. The reduction in the growth of seedlings subjected to NaCl/polyethylene glycol (PEG) stress is alleviated by BABA seed priming, which also enhanced photosynthetic pigment content and photosynthetic and mitochondrial activities, and also modified the chlorophyll a fluorescence-related parameters. Moreover, BABA seed priming reduced malondialdehyde content in the seedlings and enhanced the accumulation of proline, total protein, total carbohydrate, nitrate reductase activity, and activities of antioxidant enzymes like guaiacol peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Most of these positive features of BABA priming were predominantly exhibited when the plants were encountered with stress (NaCl/PEG). The BABA content in the BABA-treated green gram seeds and seedlings was also detected and quantified with high-performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC), and it revealed that the priming effect of BABA initiated in seeds and further gets carried over to the seedlings. It was concluded that BABA seed priming improved the drought and salinity stress tolerance potential of all the three green gram varieties, and it was evident in the NaCl-tolerant variety Pusa Vishal as compared to Pusa Ratna (abiotic stress sensitive) and Pusa 9531(drought tolerant). Dual mode in cost effectiveness of BABA priming is evident from: (1) the positive features of priming are being exhibited more during the exposure of plants to stress, and (2) priming of seedlings can be carried out by BABA application to seeds at very low concentration and volume.
Biphasic fermentation is an efficient strategy for the overproduction of Î´-endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis. - Applied biochemistry and biotechnology
This study illustrates a biphasic solid-state fermentation (SSF) strategy for the overproduction of Î´-endotoxin from Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. kurstaki (Btk) and also purification of Î´-endotoxin from the solid-fermented medium. The fermentation strategy had two phases (biphasic); i.e., the first short phase was semisolid state (12 h), and the remaining long phase was strict SSF. To achieve the biphasic SSF, after 12 h (150 rpm, 37 Â°C) fermentation of the medium [Luria-Bertani (LB) supplemented with 30 % (w/v) raw soybean flour (phase I)], the supernatant in it was completely centrifuged out (1,000 Ã— g, 10 min) aseptically for harvesting the extracellular enzymes as by-product. The resultant wet solid matter without free-flowing liquid but with embedded Btk was incubated 60 h more (phase II) for enhancing Î´-endotoxin production at static condition (37 Â°C). Coupled with this, Î´-endotoxin was purified by the modified phase separation method, and its purity was physically confirmed by both staining and microscopic techniques. The maximum Î´-endotoxin yield from solid medium (48 h) was 15.8 mg/mL (recovery was 55-59 %) LB-equivalent, while that of LB control (recovery was 95 %) was only 0.43 mg/mL (72 h), i.e., thus, in comparison, 36.74-fold more yield in solid medium obtained by 24 h less gestation period. The purified crystal proteins showed apparent molecular weights (MWs) of 45, 35, and 6 kDa on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Briefly, this unique study physically demonstrates how Btk Î´-endotoxin is purified (95-99 % purity) from solid-fermented matter for the first time, coupled with its overproduction at the expense of only 21.5 % higher production cost.
Microbial profiles of liquid and solid fraction associated biomaterial in buffalo rumen fed green and dry roughage diets by tagged 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing. - Molecular biology reports
The microbiome of buffalo rumen plays an important role in animal health and productivity. The rumen bacterial composition of both liquid and solid fraction was surveyed using pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. Sequences were analyzed using taxonomy-dependent clustering methods and revealed that the dominant ruminal bacteria shared by samples belonged to phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Fibrobacteres and Proteobacteria. The core rumen microbiome of the rumen consisted of 10 phyla, 19 classes, 22 orders and 25 families. However, the relative abundance of these bacterial groups was markedly affected by diet composition as well as in type of biomaterial. In animals fed with a green and dry roughage diet, the cellulolytic bacteria, Ruminococcaceae, and Fibrobacteraceae was found in highest abundance in all biomaterials which reflected the need for enhanced fiber-digesting capacity in buffalo. The polysaccharide-degrading Prevotellaceae bacteria were most abundant in buffalo rumen. In taxonomic comparison of rumen bacteria, about 26 genera were differentially abundant among liquid and solid fraction of ruminal fluid. These results highlight the buffalo ruminal microbiome's ability to adapt to feed with different composition.
Metabolic profile of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) biodegradation by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 10311). - Journal of environmental biology / Academy of Environmental Biology, India
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is one of the main components in the detergent and cosmetic industries. Its bioremediation by suitable microorganism has received greater attention. Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 10311 was isolated from detergent contaminated soil which had degraded 96% of SDS in 48 hrs. Attempts were made to study the metabolic byproducts of SDS degradation using GC-MS analysis. Analysis of ether extracts of surfactant established the sequential production of Dodecanol, Dodecanal and Decanoic acid. At this point, the pathway diverged into the formation of acid residues through beta oxidation. This SDS degrading isolate, Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be exploited for decontamination of detergent contaminated waste water.
Accessible solitons in diffusive media. - Optics letters
We investigate spatial solitons in nonlocal media with a nonlinear index well modeled by a diffusive equation. We address the role of nonlocality and its interplay with boundary conditions, shedding light on the behavior of accessible solitons in real samples and discussing the accuracy of the highly nonlocal approximation. We find that symmetric solitons exist only above a power threshold, with an existence region that grows larger and larger with nonlocality in the plane width power.
