A Case of Dentinogenesis Imperfecta Treated with Submerged Root Technique. - Journal of clinical and diagnostic research : JCDR
Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI), an autosomal dominant trait, is one of the most common hereditary disorders affecting both the formation and mineralization of dentin. Either or both primary and permanent dentition is affected by it. Here, we present a case report of a 13-year-old female patient affected with DGI who had undergone prosthetic rehabilitation with submerged root technique.
Design and Development of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Lysine É›-Aminotransferase Inhibitors for Latent Tuberculosis Infection. - Chemical biology & drug design
Lysine É›-aminotransferase (LAT) is a protein involved in lysine catabolism, and it plays a significant role during the persistent/latent phase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB), as observed by its up-regulation by ~40-fold during this stage. We have used the crystal structure of MTB LAT in external aldimine form in complex with its substrate lysine as a template to design and identify seven lead compounds with IC50 ranging from 18.06 to > 90 Î¼m. We have synthesized 21 compounds based on the identified lead, and compound 21 [2,2'-oxybis(N'-(4-fluorobenzylidene)acetohydrazide)] was found to be the most active with MTB LAT IC50 of 0.81 Â± 0.03 Î¼m. Compound 21 also showed a 2.3 log reduction in the nutrient-starved MTB model and was more potent than standard isoniazid and rifampicin at the same dose level of 10 Î¼g/mL.Â© 2015 John Wiley & Sons A/S.
Cayler Cardio-Facial Syndrome: An Uncommon Condition in Newborns. - Iranian journal of pediatrics
Cayler cardio-facial syndrome is a rare syndrome associated with asymmetric crying faces with congenital heart disease. We report a newborn that was diagnosed as case of Cayler Cardio-facial syndrome based on clinical features and was confirmed with FISH analysis.A term male baby, born to non-consanguineous couple through normal vaginal delivery was diagnosed to have asymmetric crying faces with deviation of angle of mouth to left side at the time of birth. The baby had normal faces while sleeping or silent. Mother was known case of hypothyroidism and was on treatment. Baby was diagnosed as case of Cayler Cardio-facial Syndrome and was investigated with echocardiogram, brain ultrasound, total body X-ray examination, X-ray of cervico-thoracic vertebral column and fundus examination. Echocardiogram showed muscular VSD, brain ultrasound was normal and fundus examination showed tortuous retinal vessels. Whole body X-ray and lateral X-ray of cervico-thoracic vertebral column were not suggestive of any skeletal abnormalities. The other associated malformation was right ear microtia. Baby FISH karyotype analysis showed deletion of 22q11.2 deletion. Baby was discharged and now on follow-up.Cayler syndrome is a rare syndrome which must be suspected if a baby has asymmetrical cry pattern and normal facies when baby sleeps. Patient must be evaluated with echocardiography to find out associated cardiac malformations. These infants should undergo FISH analysis for 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.
Mixture of fuels approach for the synthesis of SrFeO(3-Î´) nanocatalyst and its impact on the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene. - Inorganic chemistry
A modified solution combustion approach was applied in the synthesis of nanosize SrFeO(3-Î´) (SFO) using single as well as mixture of citric acid, oxalic acid, and glycine as fuels with corresponding metal nitrates as precursors. The synthesized and calcined powders were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, N2 physisorption methods, and acidic strength by n-butyl amine titration methods. The FT-IR spectra show the lower-frequency band at 599 cm(-1) corresponds to metal-oxygen bond (possible Fe-O stretching frequencies) vibrations for the perovskite-structure compound. TG-DTG confirms the formation temperature of SFO ranging between 850-900 Â°C. XRD results reveal that the use of mixture of fuels in the preparation has effect on the crystallite size of the resultant compound. The average particle size of the samples prepared from single fuels as determined from XRD was âˆ¼50-35 nm, whereas for samples obtained from mixture of fuels, particles with a size of 30-25 nm were obtained. Specifically, the combination of mixture of fuels for the synthesis of SFO catalysts prevents agglomeration of the particles, which in turn leads to decrease in crystallite size and increase in the surface area of the catalysts. It was also observed that the present approach also impacted the catalytic activity of the SFO in the catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene to azoxybenzene.
Study of deflections in maxillary major connectors: a finite element analysis. - Journal of Indian Prosthodontic Society
The Major connector is the major component of the cast partial denture to which all other parts are directly or indirectly attached. It also provides cross arch stability to help resist displacement by functional stresses. The major connector should be rigid. A flexible major connector causes an unequal distribution of forces with changes in their intensity and may cause damage to the supporting structures. Thus rigidity is of paramount to resist flexing and torquing forces. The commonly used major connectors for the maxillary arch are Anteroposterior strap, palatal strap and complete palatal plate. Application of load on the prosthesis will result in deflection. The magnitude and direction of the deflection that the prosthesis undergoes depends on the rigidity of the major connector. (1) To determine the deflection seen in maxillary removable partial denture frameworks under simulated occlusal load. (2) To compare the rigidity and deflection characteristics of different maxillary major connectors used in maxillary Kennedy's class I, class II, class III and class IV situations. A CT scan of human edentulous maxilla was taken and each section from the incisive foramen to the hamular notch was projected on the graph paper and three dimensional volumes were created from the connected successive profiles to define the final solid geometry of bone. Six framework models with different Maxillary major connectors such as Anteroposterior straps and complete palatal plate for Kennedy's class I, class II, class III and class IV situations were created. Three Dimensional Finite Element Models corresponding to the geometric model were created using ANSYS 9.0 version. The model was assigned the material properties. A vertical biting force of 20Â N was applied. The results showed maximum displacements were observed at the posterior edge of the saddle for all the frameworks. Anteroposterior palatal strap in class III and class IV situation showed the least deflection when compared to class I and class II (distal extension situation) Anteroposterior palatal strap is more rigid connector than the full palatal plate, single palatal strap, and U-shaped palatal strap and can be used in all situations.
A holistic approach to the management of Erb's palsy. - Journal of Ayurveda and integrative medicine
A 4.5-month-old female baby, presenting with complete paralysis of right upper limb with typical waiter's tip deformity, diagnosed as Erb's palsy was brought to Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Hospital. Patient was treated with an integrated approach of physiotherapy and Ayurvedic treatment with an intention of aiding faster recovery of the patient to lead a near normal life. As per Ayurvedic classics, this condition can be correlated to Ekangavata (Vata effecting any one part of the body), which is Apatarpana in nature (diseases with deprived growth of body tissue). Hence, the choice of treatment is Santarpana Chikitsa (nourishing treatment). Santarpana Bahyopakramas (nourishing external treatment modalities) such as Ashwagandhabalalakshadi Taila (Ayurvedic medicated oil) Abhyanga (oleation therapy) and Shastikashali Anna Lepa (application of processed rice paste) were administered along with electrical stimulation (physiotherapy modality), both galvanic and faradic current in three sessions. Appreciable results were observed in the form of reduction of disparity in length and mid-arm circumference of right upper limb compared to unaffected left upper limb and the muscle power too improved from zero to four, facilitating patient to near normal movement.
Visceral adiposity in young patients with coronary artery disease-a case control study. - Indian heart journal
Central obesity is associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. We carried out a hospital based case control study in young patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) to assess the importance of visceral fatCoronary artery disease was established by coronary angiogram in all cases. Controls were age- and sex-matched subjects with normal coronary angiogram. Computed tomography scan performed at the level of the umbilicus to measure subcutaneous and visceral fat area (VFA).Cases and controls were well matched in height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). Visceral fat area was significantly higher (122.58 Â± 37.59 vs. 88.4 Â± 36.95 cm(2); P=0.003) in cases whereas subcutaneous fat area was similar in cases and controls. Visceral fat area was an excellent predictor of cardiovascular risk (area under receiver operating characteristics curve 0.915 cm(2)). Visceral fat area correlated with BMI, waist hip ratio, blood sugar, triglycerides, and C-reactive protein significantly.Visceral adiposity is associated with an increased risk of CAD and it correlated with anthropometric, metabolic, and inflammatory markers.Copyright Â© 2012 Cardiological Society of India. Validation of the GRACE score for prognosis in Indian patients with acute coronary syndromes. - Indian heart journal
To validate the global registry of acute coronary events (GRACE) score in acute coronary syndromes (ACS) patients and study its angiographic correlation.Two-hundred and thirty-five ACS patients were studied for the combined endpoint of all-cause in-hospital mortality and non-fatal infarction/reinfarction. We tested the predictive accuracy of the composite GRACE score using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve. Lower systolic blood pressure (SBP) (odds ratio [OR] 7.93, P=0.005), ST-segment deviation (OR 7.79, P=0.02) and cardiac biomarker positivity (OR > 6.52, P=0.01) were significantly associated with events. Serum creatinine > 1.4 mg/dL showed a trend towards statistical significance (OR 4.14, P=0.05), whereas age > 50 years (OR 3.62, P=not significant [NS]) and Killips class 4 (OR 2.71, P=NS) showed good association. The best value for predicting events was a GRACE score of > 217 and these patients were more likely to have double/triple vessel disease (P = 0.0009). The C statistic for the GRACE score was 0.75.Higher GRACE score predicts in-hospital events and more severe angiographic coronary artery disease (CAD).Copyright Â© 2012 Cardiological Society of India. Hepatoprotective properties of Caesalpinia sappan Linn. heartwood on carbon tetrachloride induced toxicity. - Indian journal of experimental biology
Aim of the study was to investigate the methanol and aqueous extracts of heartwood of C. sappan for its hepatoprotective activity against CCl4 induced toxicity in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes and animals. Freshly isolated rat hepatocytes were exposed to CCl4 (1%) along with/without various concentrations of methanolic and aqueous extract of C. sappan (1000-800 microg/ml) and the levels of selected liver enzymes were estimated. Antihepatotoxic effect of methanolic extract was observed in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes at concentrations 1000-800 microg/ml and was found to be similar to that of standard drug silymarin. Wistar strain albino rat model was used for the investigation of in vivo hepatoprotective properties of aqueous and methanolic extract of C. sappan (100 and 200 mg/kg body weight). Liver damage was induced by ip administration of CCl4 (30%) suspended in olive oil (1 ml/kg body weight). Both the tested extracts showed potent hepatoprotective activity at 200 mg/kg body weight test dose which was comparable with that of the standard silymarin used in similar test dose. The methanolic and aqueous extract was able to restore the biochemical levels to normal which were altered due to CCl4 intoxication in freshly isolated rat hepatocytes and also in animals.

This database comprises of myriad of information about genes involved in breast cancer, its functions and drug molecules which are currently being used in the treatment of breast cancer. The data available in BCDB is retrieved from the biomedical research literature. It facilitates the user to search information on gene, its location in chromosome, functions and its importance in cancer diseases. Broadly, this can be queried by giving gene name, protein name and drug name. This database is platform independent, user friendly and freely accessible through internet. The data present in BCDB is directly linked to other on-line resources such as NCBI, PDB and PubMed.
